Chelsea climbed to second in the Women’s Super League with a 2-1 win over Brighton at Kingsmeadow.

Alyssa Thompson opened the scoring before assisting Lexi Potter’s winner, which came after Carla Camacho’s equaliser for Brighton, as the Blues closed the gap on leaders Manchester City to seven points.

After a quiet start, Chelsea went ahead after 13 minutes in stunning fashion. The Blues worked the ball well down the left wing, flowing through the Brighton defence, before Sandy Baltimore’s cross was headed in by Thompson.

However, the Seagulls were level just four minutes later as Camacho tried her luck with an attempt from the edge of the box, which took multiple deflections before bobbling past Hannah Hampton.

Nevertheless, the reigning champions were back ahead shortly before half-time. Potter scored her first senior goal for Chelsea on her first WSL start as she smashed home from inside the six-yard box.

It was an uneventful second half in comparison, with neither side managing to register a shot on target as they combined for just 0.26 expected goals (xG), which favoured Chelsea as they revived their title hopes.

Manchester United failed to capitalise on City’s draw last weekend as the Red Devils were held to a 0-0 draw against West Ham on Wednesday, seeing Marc Skinner’s side drop to third in the WSL.

Data Debrief: Thompson makes the difference

It was a routine win in the end for Chelsea, who produced 1.02 xG from 13 shots to Brighton’s 0.36 from eight attempts.

Thompson made the crucial impact with her goal and assist, while she created a joint-high two chances, registered the joint-second most shots (two) and won four of her five duels.

Twenty-one-year-old Thompson has scored seven goals in the WSL this season, more than any other Chelsea player in 2025-26.
