(GSM) – Columbus Crew kept their Major League Soccer momentum going with a 0-1 win at DC United while New York Red Bulls crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake.

Following Los Angeles Galaxy’s 1-1 draw at Chicago Fire earlier on Saturday, Columbus had an opportunity to take the lead in the Supporters Shield ranking. This award is given to the team with the most point at the end of the regular season.

And the Crew, who had already defeated DC United in the US Open Cup earlier this week, went on to do so again this time around with Guillermo Schelotto scoring the only goal of the match after 23 minutes.

Next week, conference leaders Columbus and Los Angeles face off at the Home Depot Center.

Meanwhile, the two second-placed teams in the respective conferences, Real Salt Lake and New York Red Bulls, met at Sandy’s Rio Tinto Stadium where Fabian Espindola netted the opening – and as it turned out only – goal after four minutes of play.

Dallas are a big step closer to the MLS play-offs following a 1-0 win over Canadian side Toronto FC. The winning goal came from Jeff Cunningham, once a Toronto player himself, in the 47th minute. Toronto were a man down by the end of the match as Martin Saric conceded a second yellow card late on.

Currently on course for a spot in the play-offs are Columbus Crew, New York Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Dallas, Colorado Rapids, Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquake, all but the first two representing a seemingly much stronger Western Conference.
