David De Gea another good signing for Manchester United

A few weeks ago I wrote an article asking if David de Gea would be a good signing for Manchester United.

The Spanish youngster is now having a medical ahead of a £17million move to Old Trafford.

Enhanced

I have seen a lot of David de Gea playing for Atletico Madrid in La Liga in the last 18 months and he has always looked likely to become a top-class keeper.

His performance in the under-21’s European Championship has also enhanced his growing reputation.

Potential

Manchester United have signed a player with immense potential in De Gea. In Spain he is being touted as the heir apparent to Iker Casillas in the full Spanish national side.

The Real Madrid star also came to prominence in his early-twenties and some in the Spanish media are even suggesting that De Gea could be even better than Casillas.

Needed

Manchester United are in need of a solid new keeper. With Dutchman Edwin van der Sar retiring the club were left with the unsuitable or untried trio of Tomas Kuszczak, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos.

Polish international Kuszczak has looked very unconvincing and shaky in his recent performances for United. He really couldn’t be regarded as a regular Manchester United number one.

United fans have seen more of the Invisible Man than they have of Danish keeper Lindegaard. He simply hasn’t been given a chance between the posts at Old Trafford. It seems that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t think he is good enough for the champions.

And third choice keeper Ben Amos is still inexperienced and probably needs to be loaned out to gain more game time next season.

Sir Alex knew that the position of goalkeeper was his priority in the transfer market this summer and it looks like he has his man in the young Spaniard.

Young

David de Gea at 20 years of age is very young for a keeper but he is a very mature individual and seems to take everything in his stride. He will need all his maturity and character to make it at Old Trafford.

However all the signs suggest that he is likely to be a success for the Premier League champions. De Gea maybe half the age of his predecessor but he looks to be an astute signing for the Red Devils.

Similar

David de Gea is of a similar physical stature to Dutchman Edwin van der Sar. He also has a similar ability to command and organise the defence in front of him. This is a rare ability in such a young keeper and that’s what makes De Gea so promising.

Bargain

De Gea’s transfer fee of £17million seems like a bargain to me for the type of player United have signed. The Spanish under-21 international could be in the Manchester United first team for along time to come and I’m sure he will prove value for money.

Stronger

Manchester United have done some impressive business so far this summer with the captures of Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and Blackburn defender Phil Jones. These signings are a signal of intent on Sir Alex’s part.

United have sent out a message to their rivals that they will be even stronger next season and they are not resting on their laurels. Manchester United have now spent over £50million on new recruits this summer.

United strengthening their squad this summer will mean their Premier League rivals will have to follow suit. If United’s rivals fail to strengthen their squads then the Red Devils could be heading for yet another Premier League title next season.

Who will Manchester United sign next this summer?

I agree with most comments. I jus hope our goalie cuts e mustard in england. Our strikers are ok but our midfield is going to have to change if we want to win e ECL. Barca hurt us because of that. Had hoped we would sign charlie adam. 🙁 now we’ll wait and see who SAF will sign

Sir Alex has made a strategic move in acquiring a young promising keeper. Although the goalkeeping department is important, there are serious shortfalls that our team is facing in central and defensive midfield.

Sir Alex needs to act with the necessary urgency and diligence to have any sniff at the Champs League.

Now we have the goalkeeping spot secured, it’s time for us to find the best replacements for G. Neville and Scholes. . . how exactly you replace guys as devoted and skilled as they are, I don’t know, but we need some. guys as young as Fabio/ Rafael/ whichever one of them plays on the right (geez, I’m a United fan and even I can’t tell) or as inconsistent as Anderson won’t cut it really, unless they both end up having the season of their lives.

My main concern is that we’re actually considerably (well, kind of) beginning to splash money out. We need to start doing it even more to withstand threats like Man City and to effectively challenge Barcalona.

We need a play maker and we need a defensive mid fielder. Nani is too sporadic with his play making abilities, Nasri would provide a better option and have the added benefit of being a major goal threat all by himelf. Las Diarra would be a good option as a defensive mid fielder and a far better choice than Carrick or Fletcher. Though I suppose with the acquisition of Phil Jones, he may just fall into that role. Fletcher is good when on form, so we can keep him as back up but the team has carried Carrick for too long and should kick him to the curb. Really happy with the acquisition of De Gea, in him United have a young goal keeper with good potential to become an Old Trafford legend. Afterall he has already won Europa league with Atletico and just recently the U-21 Championship with spain and he;s only 20.

Rubbish, mr. Nugent !! :-D. Rodwell is more than ready for a move now. With Carrick and Fletcher as ‘mentors’ he’ll be the first-pick in midfield in a couple of years – not only for Man Utd, but for England as well – as long as he can stay free from injuries that is.
But I think it’s evident that Man Utd must focus on getting a central midfielder in the Robson/Keane mould, but who knows – maybe that’s where SAF will use Phil Jones. Personally I’m not keen on either Sneijder or Nasri, but that’s just my opinion 😉

Diego has been linked to the BPL. Im hoping Utd are the ones that get him. He would be a great replacement. I know its been said that Nani isnt going anywhere, but with Young, Nani and Valencia, either Nani or Valencia should go. Sell on of them and some cash for Sneidjer. If not, move Valencia who is stronger to the inside.

Kun Aguero would be disastrous believe me could never work in the EPL.

However, i agree that rodwell would be a great signing, or, do this, buy a worldclass striker, a really world class striker, and play Rooney in Scholes’s position, that would be awesome

Hopefully SAF will go shopping for some central midfield reinforcements and a decent right back as well. With rumours of Sergio Ramos’ discontent at Real Madrid I’d say go for him. In the midfield-department I REALLY hope he’d go for Rodwell. Wilshere would be too much to hope for, but he’d be the perfect replacement for Scholes :-).
I’d say Man U are pretty well covered in the striker/forward department – especially with the signing of Young and Welbeck returning from loan – so no need to go splashing excessive amounts of cash there imo ;-).
