De Jong may have Barcelona future after all

Despite everything that went on with Frenkie de Jong over the summer, it seems he could still have a role to play at Barcelona for years to come.

The Dutch midfielder was a target for Manchester United, whose manager Erik ten Hag worked with him at Ajax. United and Barcelona reportedly reached an agreement over the transfer fee, but De Jong eventually chose to stay at the Camp Nou, despite a strong effort from Ten Hag to convince him to accept the Old Trafford switch.

Barcelona were keen on selling the 26-year-old, but now the Mirror have reported that they’ve made a U-turn and are ready to give him a future at the club, providing he proves capable of replacing Sergio Busquets as the holding midfielder in the team from next season.

Meanwhile, reports elsewhere suggest the Catalans are also eyeing Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wonderers for the role, and there is already a number of players at the club who would likely be able to do the job, such as Franck Kessie and Nico Gonzalez, even though the latter is currently on loan at Valencia.
