Defensive changes at Manchester United afoot

A report in the Sunday Times claims Jose Mourinho plans a summer overhaul of the Manchester United‘s defence by securing the signatures of Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Juventus’ Alex Sandro.

There have been reports of Barcelona being concerned about the possibility of losing Umtiti due to his €60 million release clause. Since his arrival, Umtiti has significantly contributed to their defensive stability, and Barcelona, who aren’t used to important players being lured away from the club, would certainly consider his potential departure a blow. However, the defender hasn’t been willing to sign a new deal so far, and €60 million is quite an affordable sum for a club like Manchester United.

Mourinho has preferred the 32-year-old duo of wingers – Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young – in the fullback positions to the likes of Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw, and he believes the addition of a player like Alex Sandro would allow him to apply a more aggressive approach against opponents of high quality.
