Ferguson hoping for QPR upset

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Queens Park Rangers to upset Manchester City next week to hand his side the title.

Speaking after United’s 2-0 win over Swansea on Sunday, Ferguson argued that QPR’s manager Mark Hughes would be keen to spoil City’s title chances after being replaced as manager by Roberto Mancini in 2009.

“He was sacked in a very unethical way and he’ll remember that,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson was happy with his side’s performance despite only scoring two goals from 28 shots.

“We did what we had to do and we won the match,” the 70-year-old manager said.

“I think that all the fans wanting us to score a lot of goals was a bit optimistic but we had a lot of chances, particularly in the first half where we played very, very well.

“In the second half, they slowed the game down and passed the ball around and they didn’t really cause any bother.”

Despite the loss, Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers preferred to focus on his side’s achievement of avoiding relegation.

“Next week is going to be brilliant,” Rodgers said.

“I will be asking all the fans if they can wear as many Elvis Presley costumes as we can because when we got promoted the bookies said there was more chance of seeing Elvis Presley than us staying at this level.”

United are behind City on goal difference heading into the final day of the English Premier League season.

Ferguson’s side need 16th-placed QPR to at least draw with City to have a chance of winning the league title.

United travel to Sunderland for their final game of the season.

“I’ve seen stranger things happen in this game of football,” the Scot said.

“But I think the important thing is for us to go (to Sunderland) in the right spirit, with the attitude to win the match, you never know, we’ll just hope.

“It gives us hope, we’ve got next week, QPR need a point and you never know.

“I just wish Sparky (Mark Hughes) was playing (against Manchester City).”

The big fight for me is fourth place. Spurs & Newcastle. Arsemal are set in third. First & Second are Man City & Man U.That fourth place is so Important for both teams. It means a top flight in Europe & Mega-Money for either team.

I am A Geordie… But I love Spurs! Gotta go with the Magpies.
