Frenkie de Jong was a crucial part of the Ajax team which reached the semi-final of the Champions League last season and he made a big-money move to Barcelona in the summer.
Barcelona beat Inter Milan at San Siro on Tuesday by 1-2 and finished top of Group F this season, but Ajax, who were odds-on to qualify from Group H, lost 0-1 in Amsterdam to Valencia and have been unexpectedly eliminated from the competition.
De Jong seemed disappointed to learn the fate of his former club.
