Deniz Undav was the matchwinner for Germany as they defeated Ghana 2-1 at MHPArena.

Abdul Fatawu restored parity in the 70th minute after Kai Havertz’s first-half penalty gave Germany the lead, but Undav was on hand late on to seal victory for Germany in Stuttgart and extend their unbeaten run.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side dominated the first half, with Nick Woltemade firing wide in the fourth minute from Havertz’s cutback before Florian Wirtz struck the post from a free-kick moments later.

Jonathan Tah squandered two opportunities from close range before Wirtz saw a goal ruled out for offside shortly after the half-hour mark, but Havertz ensured Germany would enter the break with the lead after scoring from the spot following a handball from Jonas Adjetey.

Germany pushed for a second after half-time, with Woltemade heading Lennart Karl’s cross onto the bar, and the hosts were made to pay for their wastefulness when Fatawu swept in from Derrick Kohn’s low cross.

Nevertheless, Germany were not to be denied victory as second-half substitutes Leroy Sane and Undav combined in the 88th minute, with the latter poking in the winner in the stadium where he plays his club football.

Data Debrief: Impact subs from Nagelsmann

Although Germany were wasteful, particularly in the first half, it was a deserved win as they produced 3.06 expected goals from 23 shots to Ghana’s 0.56 from six attempts.

Credit must go to Naglesmann, as his substitutions made the difference. Sane and Undav combined for the winner, while Karl recorded the joint-most shots in the match (three), created the joint-most chances (two) and completed 100% of his dribbles (two).

Germany have now won each of their last seven matches in all competitions, boosting their confidence ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
