Guardiola plays down Messi links

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the clash with West Ham United on Sunday, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola pored cold water over the reports claiming the reigning Premier League champions are interested in signing Lionel Messi this summer.

It’s no secret that there is some friction at the Camp Nou between the six-time Ballon d’Or winner and the people running the club. He recently had a public spat with sporting director Eric Abidal, his former teammate under Guardiola. Though some outlets in Spain claim president Josep Maria Bartomeu stepped in and resolved the matter, it does feel that the Argentinian is thoroughly unhappy with Barcelona’s inability to win as much as they used to in seasons gone.

Links between Messi and his former coach were quick to appear, but Guardiola says he doesn’t want Messi to leave Barcelona, and he believes the player who has broken countless records playing at Camp Nou will remain there for the rest of his career.
