Harvey Elliot & James McAtee: The England U21 heroes who will be at the heart of a summer transfer saga

Enjoying what was another famous night in Slovakia this month as they successfully defended their European U21 crown, many of England’s hottest young starlets are stealing plenty of the summer attention.

Eventually clinching an iconic 3-2 victory against arch-rivals Germany last weekend, Lee Carsley’s young squad embarked on another European Championship romp on foreign soil.

Becoming the First Nation since 2013 to officially clinch consecutive European titles, it appears that many of England’s summer heroes will find themselves at the heart of a public transfer saga.

With many of Carsley’s young heroes making it clear that they want regular first-team opportunities ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we have taken a look at two of the newly-crowned EURO U21 champions who look set for a summer switch.

Harvey Elliot – Liverpool

Spearheading England to their sensational summer success in Slovakia, Harvey Elliot finds his stock at a red-hot high and the former Fulham record-breaking is the talk of the town.

Crowned as the Player of the Tournament last weekend and enjoying what was a remarkable EURO U21 tournament, Elliot recorded five goals in just 475 minutes of action.

Opening the scoring against Germany in Saturday’s final, the Liverpool ace is certainly attracting plenty of heavyweight interest and it appears that the 22-year-old is set for a permanent move away from Anfield this summer.

Only making two Premier League starts for the newly-crowned English champions, it has been suggested that Elliot is keen on progressing his career away from Merseyside.

Failing to hold down a regular spot since Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield last summer, it was reported on Tuesday that Liverpool have already laid out their conditions to what is becoming a long list of admirers.

While the Reds might be looking for a fee in the region of £50million, it was suggested that the reigning Premier League champions would be willing to accept a lower fee if a buy-back clause can be included into any potential deal.

James McAtee – Manchester City

Leading the Three Lions out last weekend and appointed England’s permeant captain ahead of their EURO U21 tournament, James McAtee has very much been the poster boy of Carsley’s squad this summer.

However, while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola might have been filled with praise for the 22-year-old over the past 12 months, McAtee has tumbled down the former Barcelona bosses pecking order at the Etihad.

With the Sky Blues already breaking the bank this summer after recruiting both Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, the England U21 skipper will find regular first-team minutes hard to come by next season and it appears that all parties have accepted that a permeant move away is best.

Completely omitted from Guardiola’s squad for each of Man City’s final three Premier League fixtures last month, the ex-Sheffield United loanee has given up on his dream of being Kevin De Bruyne’s long-term successor at the Etihad.

With the Sky Blues placing a reported £25million price tag on the English playmaker, it appears that McAtee won’t be short of European suitors this summer.

Alongside continued links to the likes of Nottingham Forest and Everton, a host of Bundesliga clubs are also monitoring his situation with a close eye.
