Henderson’s Liverpool future uncertain

Liverpool are currently working on a number of contract extensions. One of them is reportedly captain Jordan Henderson, whose current deal expires in 2023. However, according to James Pearce and David Ornstein of The Athletic, the talks have hit a stumbling point.

Henderson has been at Liverpool for 10 years now and he’s currently the club’s longest-serving player. He passed through many difficulties in that time, including a desire from former manager Brendan Rodgers to part ways with him, and earning the captain’s armband in 2015, he led the team to the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies in 2019, as well as the long-awaited Premier League title in 2020.

However, the Liverpool hierarchy are extremely careful when handing out long-term contracts to ageing players, and it seems Henderson, 31, doesn’t feel appreciated by the people running the club as much as he believes he deserves.  On the other hand, manager Jurgen Klopp would love for the England international to remain at Anfield for the rest of his career.

The situation is very reminiscent of the one which preceded the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain this summer. However, the report stresses that the talks have not been abandoned, and there is still hope that the issue will be resolved.
