Ian Wright: Defoe as good as Villa

(GSM) – Ian Wright is full of praise for England’s hat-trick hero Jermain Defoe. The Arsenal legend believes Defoe, who guided his country past Bulgaria last Friday, is as good as Barcelona striker David Villa.

In his column for The Sun, Wright wrote: “There is talk about great strikers in Europe, including David Villa, but Jermain is as good – and he is getting better, People don’t realise how much effort some players, such as Jermain, put into the game.

“It’s not just about turning up for training each day. He is an excellent professional, doesn’t drink and he really looks after himself in the gym. He even has pilates equipment at his home.

“As I said, we first met when he came to West Ham. At the time, Harry Redknapp turned to me and said ‘Wrighty, he’s a mini you.’

“But I always felt Jermain would be a superior player because he is able to hold the ball up and link play better than myself. At West Ham, he used to stay for extra training, with his mum and stepdad watching by the side. We would practise finishing for hours, such was his determination to improve.”

He scored 3 goals against bulgaria in englands first euro qualifier. Calm yourself.

Do these english realize how ridiculous and desperate they sound when they super exaggerate mini accomplishments like beating bulgaria by calling defoe a “hero”?

Of course defoe is good, but david villa good, never.

It’s a good thing england’s national team isn’t as good as the english media say they are or else the whole team would be full of “heros”, rooney would be world player 3 years running and england would have won every world cup.

Keep diluting yourselves so you yet again get embarrassed at the next major tournament… If you qualify.

By now, most football followers will admit that English players rarely have that natural football skill.

The gap is so evident when you look at the gulf in technique on display week in, week out in the EPL vis-a-vis La Liga.

Owen(untouchable in England) went to Spain and flopped, the same fate fell upon Beckham. The technical preparation at academy level is what sets La Liga, Brasilia and even the Portuguese league apart from the boring EPL long-ball approach .

In closing, Defoe would never be as good as Villa because he just hasn’t gone through the same technical preparation.
