Inter Miami are looking to start their 2020 MLS season with a bang. The franchise led by David Beckham are aiming to become a MLS Cup contender right away, and the management wants to build a stellar team before their season debut. The former England international is making everything he can to help the squad construction during the current pre-season period.
One of the big gaps to fill in the Miami roster are the Designated Player spots. The team’s sporting director, Paul McDonough, said they won’t wait until the summer transfer window to fill the remaining two spots after they acquired Matias Pellegrini. But which players could they target?
The franchise has been linked with a plethora of big names already. Players such as Pedro Rodriguez, David Silva, Agustin Almendra, Rogelio Funes Mori, Dorlan Pabon and Roger Martinez have been touted with an MLS switch. However, Pabon and Martinez already rejected moves to Miami. Right now, two of the biggest names getting linked with Miami are two world-class players. We are talking about Edinson Cavani and Luka Modric.
What’s the transfer situation of both Modric and Cavani?
The PSG striker has been explicit on his desire to leave the Ligue 1 champions as soon as possible. He couldn’t complete a move to Atletico Madrid, and he didn’t want to join Manchester United. The MLS move seems quite likely, although it remains to be seen if it will be for this season, or with an eye towards the 2021 campaign. Cavani’s contract with PSG expires in June this year.
Modric’s case is slightly more complicated. The 2018 Ballon D’Or has generated lots of interest all over Europe, and Inter Milan have been trying to sign him for the last 18 months but unsuccessfully. The Real Madrid midfielder ends his contract at Santiago Bernabeu in June 2021. But will he stay at the Spanish club until the end of his contract? If that’s the case, then Modric would leave the club for free in 18 months. That’s not a plausible scenario for Madrid. Ergo, they could very well try to sell him at the end of the current season.
Are Inter Miami going to move for them?
Beckham wants to sign both players. The MLS would welcome both as well. They could give the league a new status, since both remain highly capable of continue playing in Europe for a few more years. But that’s not to say they’re both going to join Miami midway through the season.
Miami do not want to wait until midway of the league campaign to sign two DPs because they could only join the side by late July or early August. But if Miami do not find other capable players, then they might just wait for them. Both players are impressive, world-class talents that would put the MLS in a whole new spectrum in the recruiting department.
