According to the Daily Mail, German club Wolfsburg are interested in signing Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw this summer. However, reports suggest that the full-back has decided to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

The 23-year-old will be a free agent next summer, as his Red Devils contract expires in 2019. That means the England international would be able to sign a pre-contract agreed with foreign clubs next January.

No talks over an extension have been reported, yet he seems happy to stay with the Manchester club and attempt to prove his worth to the club.

Not working out at Manchester United

Luke Shaw arrived at Manchester United from Southampton in the summer of 2014 for a fee reportedly in the region of £30million. At the time, Shaw was one of the brightest young English players in the game.

In his final season at Southampton was among the six nominees for PFA Young Player of the Year and named in the Premier League Team of the season. United supposedly beat off competition from rivals Chelsea then managed by current boss Jose Mourinho for the full-back’s signature.

At the time of the move, Mourinho was not sure that Shaw deserved a big wage and did want to upset his Blues squad. The Portuguese’s original thought on Shaw’s ability was not entirely wrong, as Shaw has struggled to fulfil his potential at Old Trafford.

Last season, Shaw failed to secure the left-back or left wing-back positions at United, with veteran England international Ashley Young keeping him out of the team.

Keen to prove a point to Mourinho

It seems that Shaw is keen to prove a point to his doubters, the biggest of them it seems is Mourinho. The 23-year-old posted pictures earlier this summer of his pre-season training and showed that he is peak physical condition, despite the claims of some that he is out of shape.

That is the allegation thrown at Shaw on a regular basis, that he is not fit enough to play regular first-team football. Judging by the pictures, most us would love to be that out of shape!

Shaw has reportedly already turned down a move to Everton this summer, while Tottenham have been constantly linked with a move for the former-Saints star. However, with just a year left on his contract, time is running out for Shaw to prove he can cut it with the Red Devils. It seems no matter how well Shaw plays, Mourinho’s mind is made up about the full-back.

Shaw set to start the season in the team

If media reports are accurate, Luke Shaw is likely to start the season in the Red Devils starting line-up, with Young currently recovering from helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

Mourinho’s side kick-off their campaign with a home game against Leicester, which United are odds of 4/9 to win. The Red Devils will be eager to get off to a winning start to their Premier League campaign.

Shaw will also be hoping to prove that he is good enough to play for Manchester United on a regular basis. I believe he is fighting a losing battle. He does have talent, but maybe it would be served at a club with a different boss.

When Shaw signed for United ahead of Chelsea, Mourinho was scathing in his assessment of the full-back. Judging by his limited opportunities at United under the Portuguese boss, it seems doubtful he will ever change his mind.

From the clubs point of view, the fact that United could lose such a valuable asset as Shaw for nothing next summer is incredible. It seems like the wrong move all around for the full-back to stay in Manchester this summer.
