With the FA Cup making its return this weekend, we have a stacked European schedule on our hands. On that note, for those of you looking to place a Saturday acca, we have found a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday January 28th
BST 15:00 Luton Town vs Grimsby
While Luton might have been left heartbroken by that collapse against West Brom on January 14th, Saturday’s hosts have certainly proven that was just a minor blip. Extending on their FA Cup adventure earlier in the month thanks to a 2-1 victory away at Wigan, Rob Edwards’ side have once again gained plenty of plaudits from across the Championship. Shocking almost everyone in England’s second-tier last season as they snatched a play-off spot, the former Watford boss should find the mood in his camp at a real high. Along with clinching a 2-0 win away at the Latics while on Championship duties last weekend, Luton have lost just one of their previous seven matchups across all formats. With that run stemming all the way back to December 10th, Edwards’ men have also caught the eye with their recent displays in the final third. With their purple patch underlined by a 3-0 romp against QPR last month, the Bedfordshire-based outfit should be smelling a golden chance here. With Grimsby knowing that they face a huge FA Cup challenge on Saturday afternoon, Paul Hurst’s side are coming off the back of a nightmare display. Suffering a woeful 5-0 drumming away at Swindon, the Mariners have come tumbling down the League Two table. Likewise, with the former Southend boss seeing his side lose five of their last six contests away from Blundell Park, we’re backing a fairly routine home victory here.
Tip: Luton Town to win by 2+ goals @ 6/5
15:00 Coventry vs Huddersfield
Although Coventry might have found themselves enjoying a real November flurry last year, Saturday’s hosts have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Shockingly slumping out of the FA Cup on January 7th following an infamous 4-3 loss at the hands of National League outfit Wrexham, Mark Robins’ men are in the midst of a three-match losing run. Last seen showing more glaring defensive issues as they were hit with a 4-2 loss at home against Norwich, the Sky Blues have shipped nine strikes on that three-match rut. Freefalling down the Championship table and with just a single victory to their name from any of their previous nine matchups across all formats, Coventry have certainly gained a reputation for their lively affairs on home soil. On the flip side, while Huddersfield might have shocked many across the Championship last season as they reached the play-off final, Saturday’s guests are now battling it out at the other end of the table. Still sat three points adrift of safety and facing a major uphill struggle in 2023, the Yorkshire-based outfit are yet to claim a single win since opening the New Year. Slumping to a 3-1 drumming away at Preston earlier in the month as their FA Cup adventure came to an abrupt end, we could be treated to an enjoyable affair here. With each of the last three meetings between Coventry and Huddersfield finishing with both teams finding the net, we’re backing a similar outcome.
Tip: Both teams to score @ 10/11
16:00 Troyes vs Lens
Extending on their Coupe de France adventure last weekend as they cruised their way to a 3-1 victory away at Brest, Lens are enjoying what has quickly become a history-making campaign. Although Saturday’s guests might have only made their Ligue 1 return last season, they now find themselves at the heart of a remarkable title chase. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat just three points adrift of defending champions PSG, Franck Haise’s men are breezing towards a maiden top-four finish. Opening 2023 with a famous display on home soil as they grabbed a 3-1 victory against the Parisians, the mood in their camp is at a red-hot high. Continuing to gain a string of admirers from across Europe on what has been an astonishing rise, it should also be noted that Lens have suffered just a single Ligue 1 defeat so far this season. Although Troyes might have claimed a much-needed 3-2 victory away at Strasbourg earlier in the month, it appears that was just a minor boost for Patrick Kisnorbo’s men. Last seen putting in another woeful display as they were hit with a 5-1 drumming away at Lille, the former Melbourne City boss has seen his side lose each of their last three domestic showdowns. Now firmly looking over their shoulder at a looming relegation scrap, Saturday’s hosts will know that they face a real challenge this weekend. With Lens claiming a thumping 3-1 victory when they made the trip to the Stade de l’Aube last season, we’re backing a similar outcome here.
