Jurgen Klinsmann's Bayern Munich dropped to ninth in the table as they suffered their second consecutive league defeat with a 1-0 reverse at Hanover on Saturday as Hamburg regained top spot.

Having been hammered 5-2 at home to Werder Bremen the week before, reigning champions Bayern were poor again as goalkeeper Michael Rensing was wrong-footed by Hanover midfielder Szabolcs Huszti whose free-kick flew into the net on 23 minutes.

Their star midfielder Franck Ribery came off the bench in the second-half, but the flying Frenchman failed to work his magic as Bayern had the worst possible preparation for Tuesday night's Champions League game against Lyon.

A header after 11 minutes by Croatian striker Mladen Petric was enough to give Hamburg a 1-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach to put them top of the table after Schalke 04 lost on Friday night.

And there was some crazy football at ten-man Werder Bremen as midfielder Mesut Oezil hit the winner for the home side in a 5-4 victory over Hoffenheim which put his side third in the table.

Having dismantled Bayern the previous week, Werder picked up where they left off by racing into a 4-2 lead at half-time.

Oezil put Bremen ahead on eight minutes and although Hoffenheim's Senegal striker Demba Ba equalised soon after, Bremen scored three goals before Hoffenheim's midfielder Sejad Salihovic curled in a free-kick on 36 minutes to make it 4-2 at the break.

But Bremen suffered a double blow early in the second half as Hoffenheim's Vedad Ibisevic converted a penalty to make it 4-3 just minute before Germany defender Per Mertesacker was shown a red card for hacking down the striker.

A header from Hoffenheim defender Marvin Compper on 71 minutes levelled the scores before Oezil hit his second of the game to seal the win on 81 minutes.

Bayer Leverkusen are up to second in the table thanks to their 3-2 win at struggling VfL Bochum.

The home-side were 3-0 down but with ten minutes left they scored twice in as many minutes to ensure a dramatic finish.

And Borussia Dortmund are up to fifth in the table thanks to their impressive 3-0 win at home to VfB Stuttgart to seal their first win in five games.

Energie Cottbus picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin to lift themselves off the bottom of the table. On Friday night, Schalke 04 yielded the top spot with a shock 1-0 win at Cologne.

This was the first time Cologne have beaten Schalke at home in 13 years and a header from Youssef Mohamad just before half-time was enough to give the home side the three points.

“It is the same as piano players, you can't just achieve success like this by chance, that is why you must practice, practice, practice,” said Cologne coach Christoph Daum.

On Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt entertain Arminia Bielefeld while VfL Wolfsburg are at Karlsruhe.
