LA Galaxy boss plays down Messi links

There has been some turmoil at Barcelona recently, and as a rift between the squad and sporting director Eric Abidal seemed to be widening, the future of Lionel Messi became a hot topic. Most recently, reports broke about LA Galaxy being very interested in bringing the Argentine superstar to the MLS to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left to join AC Milan this winter.

However, that link, just like any other before, has been played down quickly. LA Galaxy manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto is adamant that there is nothing in those stories, ‘nothing at all’. As relayed by AS, he pointed to the obvious fact that any team on the planet would love to have the six-time Ballon d’Or winner in their ranks, and added that his relationship with the player could be perceived as an opportunity, but he says his club haven’t made any effort towards the transfer happening.

Messi’s contract doesn’t expire until 2021, but he reportedly has a clause in it, allowing him to leave this summer for free, should he wish to.
