Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is on course to be fit for his side’s clash against Premier League rivals Manchester United later this month.

The 28-year-old was expected to be sidelined for two weeks as he recovers from a groin operation which has ruled him out of England’s World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Croatia.

But Reds manager Rafa Benitez revealed the midfielder is making good progress and is hopeful he will be back in time for the Anfield fixture on September 13.

“Steven is okay. He’s started with bicycle work and will start jogging, so I think he will be ready soon,” said Benitez.

Benitez admitted Liverpool have yet to hit peak form but he is convinced they will improve once he has a full squad to pick from.

“Javier Mascherano, Lucas and Ryan Babel arrived late (due to the Olympics) and I am sure that in a few weeks’ time it will be better,” Benitez said. “We need to have better possession and work on having a higher tempo.”
