Liverpool confident of new Wijnaldum deal

Liverpool are confident of Georginio Wijnaldum signing a new contract soon, according to Football Insider (via Sky Sports).

The midfielder arrived to Anfield from Newcastle in 2016, and saw his role in the middle of the park change slightly under Jurgen Klopp. From playing further up the pitch as a number 10, Wijnaldum is now a full-time box-to-box midfielder, well-suited for the 4-3-3 the German manager has mostly been utilizing as his preferred setup.

The Dutch international has so far netted 18 goals in 177 appearances for the Merseyside club, but some of those were extremely important – like the two he bagged in last season’s Champions League semifinal against Barcelona.

Given that he is about to enter the final 12 months of his current deal, there have been some speculations in recent months over what the future may hold for him. But Liverpool obviously appreciate his importance to the team and believe they will have no problem convincing the 29-year-old to pledge his service to them once more.
