Liverpool won’t go in for de Ligt

Despite the recent reports, Liverpool will not be signing Matthijs de Ligt of Ajax this summer, according to James Pearce of Liverpool Echo.

The 19-year-old Ajax captain has attracted interest all over Europe with his heroic displays in Ajax’s incredible run to the Champions League semifinal, where they fell agonizingly short of taking a step further.

He has been linked heavily with Barcelona, with his name featuring daily in a number of Spanish media outlets and various things apparently happening on that front. The Catalans have apparently made their offer, both to the player and his current club, and are unwilling to raise it amid interest from others. Those “others” include Liverpool, but it seems there is no truth in that.

Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez have all performed very well alongside stalwart Virgil van Dijk whenever called upon, and manager Jurgen Klopp is happy with the options at his disposal. Having signed van Dijk for a world record fee for a defender – £75 million, the Reds have no intention of doing anything similar at this point.
