Son Heung-min set up both of Los Angeles FC’s goals as they took a 2-1 lead in their Champions Cup semi-final against Toluca.
It seemed as though the spoils would be shared at BMO Stadium when Jesus Angulo dragged Liga MX leaders Toluca level in the 73rd minute.
Yet Son picked out the head of Nkosi Tafari in stoppage time to ensure LAFC hold the advantage heading into the second leg.
Hugo Lloris pulled off a string of fantastic saves to deny Toluca a first-half opener, though Timothy Tillman missed two fantastic chances for LAFC.
Tillman made no mistake at the third time of asking, as he took Son’s flick under his spell on the edge of the box and drilled into the bottom-left corner.
Jacob Shaffelburg had a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR check, and Toluca made their luck count when Angulo took in Paulinho’s pass and curled a fine finish beyond Lloris.
Yet in the 91st minute, Son whipped in a brilliant free-kick from which Tafari nodded home to hand LAFC a slender lead in the tie.

Data Debrief: Son sets LAFC up
Son has now assisted seven Champions Cup goals for LAFC this season, five more than any of his team-mates and two more than any other player in the competition.
Both of the chances he created on Wednesday resulted in assists, while he also successfully completed two of three dribbles.
The chance he set up for Tafari’s winner, meanwhile, was worth 0.58 expected goals (xG), a large proportion of LAFC’s overall 1.26.
