Lukaku to Newcastle falls through

Newcastle have confirmed that the deal for Jordan Lukaku to join them on loan from Lazio has fallen through.

The 24-year-old defender, who is the brother of Manchester United striker Romelu, was at the north-east of England having received permission from Lazio to travel to Newcastle for a medical. However, the Premier League side later released a statement in which they said the deal would not be going through, and even though they did not give any further explanations for their decision, Sky Sports believe that it has been reached on medical grounds, rather than financial reasons, given that the deal was fully agreed before the player had made the trip to Tyneside.

Lukaku has now returned to Rome, and Newcastle have expressed their best wishes for his future.

Manager Rafa Benitez refused to talk about him or any other potential transfer target in his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of the Magpies’ FA Cup clash with Watford.
