What could be more natural than a team that’s just won a league title celebrating on the plane on the way home?

However, Manchester City players celebrated by singing a song that is a version of Liverpool’s “Allez Allez Allez” chant, altered so that it mocks the achievements of the Merseysiders who finished second in the Premier League with 97 points, one behind City. The altered lyrics contain words such as “battered in the streets” – indicating a reference to what happened to Sean Cox, a Liverpool supporter who suffered life-threatening injuries at the hands of a Roma fan ahead of last year’s Champions League semifinal, as well as “victims of it all” which in turn appears to be mocking the events at Hillsborough in 1989 – one of the most tragic incidents in the history of the game where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

As the video appeared on social media, the behaviour of City players was loudly condemned by Liverpool supporters, while a Manchester City spokesperson responded by denying the Sean Cox and Hillsborough references, and added that the song refers only to the defeat Liverpool suffered from Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev last year.
