Marseille 3-2 Lyon: Aubameyang the hero with late double

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as Marseille forged a brilliant comeback in a thrilling 3-2 win over Lyon in Choc des Olympiques.

Lens’ 1-1 draw at Strasbourg on Friday opened the door for Lyon to move to within five points of second place, but Paulo Fonseca’s team could not take their chance, despite twice going ahead.

Instead, Aubameyang was the hero for Marseille, who claimed their first Ligue 1 win under new boss Habib Beye.

Having been played in by Endrick, Corentin Tolisso struck inside the third minute for Lyon, and the midfielder thought he had doubled the visitors’ lead early in the second half, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Marseille made that fortune count two minutes later, with Igor Paixao cutting in from the right and unleashing a curling effort that Dominik Greif could only help into the top corner.

Yet another sweeping move put Lyon back on course for victory, with Endrick finding Remi Himbert, who squared up his marker before drilling into the bottom-left corner in the 76th minute.

With nine minutes of normal time remaining, however, Paixao’s cross was met on the volley by veteran campaigner Aubameyang, who steered a fine finish home.

And in the first minute of stoppage time, Aubameyang was on hand to turn in from Ethan Nwaneri’s low centre, sending the home fans at Stade Velodrome into raptures.
