McCoist thrilled with Rangers fight

Rangers boss Ally McCoist said their 3-2 win over bitter rivals Celtic on Sunday has given the embattled club a ‘real boost’.

The Glasgow giants entered administration in February, and the 10-point deduction they were hit with by the Scottish Premier League all but ended any hopes they had of retaining their title.

McCoist’s team had lost three of their past four league games heading into Sunday’s clash at Ibrox, but they took the lead after 11 minutes through a brilliant goal from Sone Aluko.

Celtic’s cause was hindered when Cha Du-Ri was sent off on 29 minutes for pulling down Lee Wallace, and they went down to nine men just before the hour mark when Victor Wanyama was dismissed for a two-footed lunge on Steven Whittaker.

Rangers made it 3-0 thanks to strikes from Andrew Little and Wallace, while a late Scott Brown penalty and a header from Thomas Rogne made the scoreline look respectable for the visitors.

Celtic could have clinched the league title with a win, and McCoist said Rangers’ victory would do plenty to lift spirits around the club.

“There certainly was a release of tension today because we wanted to win that game so much for our support,” McCoist told BBC Scotland.

“Through these troubled times, they have been absolutely fantastic.

“I thought the atmosphere within the stadium was absolutely incredible.

“It has given everybody within the club a real, real boost. But, as I’ve said all along, the most important thing is the future of the football club long-term.

“Hopefully in the next two or three weeks, we can get that established and get back on the track and going in the right direction.

“I thought we dominated the game. I thought we were by far the better team and I don’t think the scoreline reflects the true amount of possession and chances we had.”
