McCoist upbeat despite loss

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has praised his beleaguered team after their 2-1 Scottish Premier League defeat to Dundee United on Saturday.

McCoist’s makeshift squad, which has been decimated by injury and a loss of personnel after the club entered administration, battled valiantly at Tannadice, but goals from Keith Watson and Jon Daly lifted Dundee United to victory.

Substitute Sone Aluko pulled a goal back on the hour mark after his shot took a deflection off John Rankin, and McCoist said he was happy with the spirit of his team.

“I’ve no complaints about the effort and commitment the players showed today,” McCoist told Sky Sports.

“For 75 minutes of the game, we were really good – certainly in the first half we created the better chances.”

McCoist praised the effort of Nigerian international Aluko, and said the winger had responded well after being demoted to the bench.

“I was tempted to start with him,” McCoist said.

“But I felt his form had dipped slightly recently but I tell you what, I got a reaction from him.”

Rangers will welcome a number of first-team regulars back into the squad for next weekend’s visit of Celtic to Ibrox, with vice-captain Carlos Bocanegra and defender Dorin Goian set to resume after suspension.

Should Celtic defeat Kilmarnock on Sunday, they could wrap up the Scottish Premier League title with a win at Ibrox next weekend.

Rangers have lost three out of their past four league games, but McCoist insisted he would welcome the challenge of Neil Lennon’s side.

“I’ve never been scared of a game in my life and I’m not going to start now,” he said.
