Medel set for Bologna switch

Besiktas midfielder Gary Medel is set to leave the Turkish club and will be going to Bologna on Tuesday to complete the move, according to Marca.

Following the early years of his career in his native South America, the 32-year-old came to Europe, where he first played for Cardiff City and then for Inter Milan. After that he joined Besiktas in July 2017 on a three-year contract, for a reported €3 million.

Most recently the Chilean was mentioned this past July because of an altercation with Lionel Messi during the Copa America match between Argentina and Chile, after which both Medel and Messi were given straight red cards. There had been talk of West Ham’s interest in Medel, but following the incident the Hammers’ fans expressed their disapproval and the deal, genuine or only rumoured, never materialised.

Due to his often belligerent behaviour on the pitch the Chile international, who now has four international red cards, was nicknamed ‘Pitbull’.

During his stint at Besiktas Medel appeared in altogether 77 matches and scored one goal.
