Messi doesn’t want to be ‘handcuffed’ to Barcelona

Speaking in an interview with the ‘Perros de la Calle’ show on Radio Metro (as relayed by Marca), Lionel Messi revealed that there had been talk with Barcelona about him signing a contract ‘for life’ , as was the case with Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta previously.

But his response to such suggestions was that he wasn’t ready to deny himself the right of choice, wanting to reserve a potential decision to leave for himself in case he becomes unhappy at the club. In order to avoid that, the club need to set high goals, to fight for them; and achieve them as well. He made it very clear, however, that he is happy at the moment and sees himself staying there all his life.

Barcelona fans apparently got scared upon learning that his contract is of such nature that it allows him to leave at the end of each season.

The 32-year old also revealed that both he and Luis Suarez are still in touch with Neymar, and that he thoroughly enjoyed the time Cristiano Ronaldo was with Real Madrid.

“It was good when Cristiano Ronaldo was here, it made the Clasico much more special and LaLiga as well,” he added.

“It gave value to the competition.”
