(GSM) – Los Angeles Galaxy are back on top in the Major League Soccer Western Conference following a 2-1 win over local rivals Chivas USA on Sunday.

After suffering a home defeat by New York Red Bulls in their last match, the Galaxy hoped to bounce back in the LA ‘Superclasico’ played at Home Depot Stadium.

The match had been under way for 23 minutes when the Galaxy took the lead as Edson Buddle powered a shot past keeper Thornton for 0-1.

David Beckham, who recently returned from injury, got his first goal of the season in the 39th minute with a free kick leaving the goalkeeper stranded.

Former Galaxy striker Alan Gordon pulled one back from close range in the 63rd minute.

Galaxy substitute Eddie Lewis received a controversial red card later in the second half, but his team held on to their lead to secure the victory.

Los Angeles are now back on top in the Western Conference, two points ahead of Real Salt Lake and on course to win the Supporters Shield.

For Chivas USA, the defeat means that they are officially out of contention for a spot in the play-offs.
