Thomas Muller and Sebastian Berhalter scored in second-half stoppage time as the Vancouver Whitecaps stunned the Portland Timbers with a 3-2 comeback win in MLS.

The 2025 MLS Cup runners-up appeared to be staring at their second defeat of the season as they entered additional time 2-1 down at BC Place.

Edier Ocampo had profited from some terrible positioning from Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis to give the hosts an early lead in Saturday’s Cascadia derby, only for Juan Mosquera to equalise with an incredible, dipping volley into the far corner after 36 minutes.

The Timbers went into half-time in the ascendency as David da Costa dinked a cute finish over Yohei Takaoka from a tight angle, and despite Vancouver dominating the second half, it looked as though the visitors would leave Canada with all three points.

That was until Antony was penalised for blocking Ocampo’s volley with his outstretched arm, with Muller stroking the spot-kick into the roof of the net at the start of stoppage time.

And things got even better for the Whitecaps in the fifth extra minute, as Berhalter’s side-footed attempt from the edge of the area just crept beyond the outstretched fingertips of Pantemis to spark wild celebrations.

Vancouver are second in the Western Conference with 15 points from six matches, one point behind early-season leaders Los Angeles FC.

LAFC ran riot on Saturday against Orlando City, with Denis Bouanga scoring a hat-trick in a 6-0 win at BMO Stadium. Sergi Palencia and Tyler Boyd were also on target, after David Brekalo put through his own net to kickstart the scoring in the seventh minute.

Son Heung-min assisted four of LAFC’s goals, all of which came in the first half as they went into the interval 5-0 up, with Bouanga profiting from three of those assists.

“Sonny has been amazing for our group,” head coach Marc Dos Santos said. “He doesn’t have to score every time.

“He has to help the team, and that’s what he’s doing, so I see it in a different way. It was savage, the way he played.”

Data Debrief: Fantastic four for Son

Son became only the 11th player in MLS history to record four assists in a single game, and the first since Lionel Messi registered five – the all-time most in the competition – against the New York Red Bulls in May 2024.

There was also a landmark achievement for LAFC at the other end of the pitch, as they became the first team in MLS history to start a season with six straight clean sheets.

They are only the fourth team in the competition’s history to record a run of six shutouts at any point in a single season, and just the second to do so in the last 15 years, after New York City in 2022.
