MLS wrap: Kansas City win leaders´ battle

Sporting Kansas City continued their brilliant start to the MLS season on Saturday as the New York Red Bulls lost ground.

The Eastern Conference-leading Kansas City made it six wins from as many games with a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.

A 63rd-minute goal from Aurelien Collin was all that separated the two teams at Livestrong Sporting Park, with Real Salt Lake staying top of the Western Conference despite the loss.

Collin was left unmarked as he surged into the area to head in a Graham Zusi corner just after the hour-mark.

CJ Sapong netted just before half-time for the hosts, but he was ruled to have fouled Jamison Olave as he headed past Nick Rimando.

The New York Red Bulls slipped eight points adrift of Kansas City after playing out a 2-2 draw at home to the San Jose Earthquakes.

Kenny Cooper gave the hosts a fifth-minute lead when he beat the offside trap and finished off a pinpoint pass from Thierry Henry.

But an error in midfield cost the Red Bulls after a quarter of an hour, leading to Rafael Baca tapping in the equaliser.

They restored their advantage in the 23rd minute, as Dax McCarty volleyed in a cutback from Dane Richards.

The Earthquakes, who are second in the Western Conference, hit back again before half-time through Chris Wondolowski, who finished off a neat team move with a diving header.

A Zach Scott goal helped the Seattle Sounders move into third in the West with a 1-0 win against the Colorado Rapids.

Toronto slumped to a club-worst fifth consecutive loss as Oswaldo Minda’s 31st-minute effort gave Chivas USA a 1-0 win.

DC United extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 2-1 win at the New England Revolution.

Maicon Santos and Chris Pontius struck for United after Pepe Moreno gave the Revolution a surprise sixth-minute lead.

The Philadelphia Union recorded their first win of the season as Gabriel Gomez’s penalty saw them to a 1-0 victory at home to Columbus Crew, while Dallas came from behind to beat Montreal Impact 2-1.
