Barcelona have chosen Alvaro Morata of Chelsea as their main target to act as the backup option for Luis Suarez, according to Sport. The Catalan club parted ways with Munir El Haddadi who made his way to Sevilla this month, and are at the moment effectively without a second-choice striker.
They have been contemplating a number of players for the role. Olivier Giroud, also of Chelsea, has been considered closely. Ernesto Valverde apparently likes the French international very much, but he has no previous experience in La Liga and the Barcelona head coach sees that as a significant downside. Another option would be Christian Stuani of Girona, currently La Liga’s third-best goalscorer. However, Barcelona are aware that tempting him away from his current club would be a big blow to Girona, and they don’t want to do anything to spoil the excellent relationship the two clubs currently enjoy.
Morata, on the other hand, ticks all the boxes.
It does, however, bring to mind the question of whether Morata would want to join the Catalans, having had two spells with their arch-rivals Real Madrid, as well as the question of swapping one backup role for another.
