Mount ready to push on after overcoming Man Utd setbacks

Mason Mount is confident he has overcome the many setbacks he has faced in his Manchester United career and is keen to kick on for the Red Devils this season.

Mount was on the scoresheet during United’s 4-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Monday with a fine finish from Bruno Fernandes’ clever ball into the box.

Ruben Amorim’s team had been pegged back just before the break when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde found a way past Senne Lammens following Fernandes’ 25th-minute opener.

But United turned on the style in the second half, with Mount’s brilliant strike sandwiched in between goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Fernandes.

Indeed, United have now won three and drawn two of their last five top-flight away games, last stringing together a longer unbeaten run on the road in February 2022 (W3 D4).

However, there has been a resurgence in 2025-26 for Mount, with the midfielder having found the back of the net three times in 12 Premier League appearances this term.

It has been a stop-start beginning to life at Old Trafford since his reported £55m switch from Chelsea in 2023, but Mount believes he has now found his best form.

“Anytime I play, I obviously want to play to the best of my ability and perform. I’ve had setbacks,” Mount told Sky Sports.

“I’ve had difficult times, I feel now I’m ready to keep pushing on and building on these performances.

“Getting in the goals, that’s the most important thing as a forward player, and just keep going and working hard. That’s exactly what I’m focusing on now.”

Mount has only made 60 appearances for United since joining the club two years ago, with several injuries halting his progress under Erik ten Hag and Amorim.

And while the 26-year-old was thrilled with his own performance, he was quick to praise Fernandes’ display at Molineux Stadium, where he again stole the show.

Since his debut in the competition on February 1, 2020, only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (186) and former Tottenham star Son Heung-min (124) have registered more goal involvements than Fernandes (123 – 66 goals, 57 assists).

The Portugal international has also now racked up 15 goal involvements in his last 14 Premier League games for United against sides starting the day in the relegation zone (six goals, nine assists).

Fernandes also ended the game with team-high totals for final third entries (12), chances created (five), touches (85), accurate passes (55) and passes into the final third (29).

“We all know the calibre of player he is. When he gets on the ball, he’s always trying to create something,” Mount said of Fernandes.

“He’s a joy to play with as a player that’s higher up the pitch because you know he’s having a look, and he’s going to play the ball over the top.”

United are now up to sixth in the Premier League and just one point behind Crystal Palace in fourth.

“It was an important win for us,” Mount concluded. “Obviously, we let them back in it before half-time, and we went into the changing room frustrated with the end to the first half.

“The manager had a few things to say, and we came out there, and it was down to us to attack with purpose and finish the chances we were creating.

“We’re happy with the second half, parts of the first half as well. Overall, very happy with that.”
