New Messi contract top priority for Barca

According to AS, Barcelona have made getting Lionel Messi to sign a new contract their absolute priority, despite the current crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic as much in football as in every other aspect of life worldwide.

The Argentinian superstar has so far scored 626 goals in 718 games in all competitions for the Catalan club. He has helped and led them to 10 La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies, and four Champions League triumphs. He has also won the Ballon d’Or six times, more than any other player in the history of the game.

The 32-year-old is contracted to Barcelona until the summer of 2021, with an option to leave for free at the end of any season should he wish to do so. In light of recent troubles within the club, he was linked for a while with Premier League champions Manchester City, currently led by his former boss Pep Guardiola.

It is believed Messi is open to signing a contract extension for further 12 months, preferring to keep the mentioned getaway clause.
