Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at St. James’ Park in UEFA Champion League Group F on Tuesday evening.

It was Newcastle’s first defeat in the UEFA Champions League this campaign.

The Premier League club had earlier drawn with AC Milan at San Siro and hammered Paris Saint-Germain at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle were expected to win against Borussia Dortmund at home.

However, it was the Bundesliga club who emerged victorious in the game.

Felix Nmecha’s composed finish in first-half added time proved to be the difference between Newcastle and Dortmund.

Newcastle could have conceded more had Nick Pope not made an outstanding double save from Donyell Malen and Niclas Fullkrug in the first half.

Eddie Howe’s side are now third in UEFA Champions League Group F with four points from three matches.

Newcastle, who can be backed to win the UEFA Champions League this season at 25/1 on Zetbet, are level on points with Borussia Dortmund in second and are two points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

AC Milan are fourth with two points from three games.

Newcastle will return to action this coming weekend when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers away from home in the Premier League.

The Magpies’ next game in the UEFA Champions League will be against Borussia Dortmund in Germany in November.

This is what we learned from the UEFA Champions League game between Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund at St. James’ Park:

Newcastle United will find it hard in UEFA Champions League

Newcastle United’s ‘honeymoon period’ in the UEFA Champions League is well and truly over. After picking up four points against AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, fans must have been over the moon. However, the defeat to Borussia Dortmund at home indicates how much work they still have to do. Of course, Newcastle are still very much in with a chance of progressing to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League, but they have to work extremely hard.

Alexander Isak injury an issue for Newcastle United

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak suffered a groin injury against Borussia Dortmund. It is a massive blow for the Magpies. The Sweden international is unlikely to be on the sidelines for long since manager Eddie Howe has said that it is not a serious injury. However, even missing a few games would affect the Magpies. Isak is one of the best and most important players for Newcastle. The 24-year-old has scored six goals in six Premier League starts for the Magpies so far this season.

Borussia Dortmund cannot be taken lightly

Borussia Dortmund remain a force to be reckoned with. While Dortmund are not playing wonderful football like they used to under Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, but they are a very efficient side who get the job done. Dortmund are now second in UEFA Champions League Group F. The German club will certainly fancy progressing to the next round of Europe’s premier club competition. Dortmund are fourth in the Bundesliga table at the moment with 20 points from eight games, just two points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen. They can also win the Bundesliga title
