No Everton return for Donovan

One-time Everton loan signing Landon Donovan has confirmed he will not return to Goodison Park for a second term.

The LA Galaxy captain made 10 appearances for the Toffees earlier this season, scoring twice before moving back to the US to continue playing Major League Soccer.

Manager David Moyes was keen to acquire the American’s services once more, albeit temporarily.

But the 28-year-old said he needed to rest his body for next season’s MLS season if he wants to get the best out of himself.

“I feel it is important to continue to rest and recover this off-season as opposed to going on loan,” Donovan said in a statement on Tuesday.

“I enjoyed my time at Everton last season and still appreciate all the support their fans have given me.”

“I never considered being loaned to a club other than Everton, but I have been playing nearly non-stop for the past two years and I believe that this decision will allow me to perform at my best for the Galaxy and the national team throughout the upcoming year.”

“I look forward to rejoining my Galaxy team-mates for the start of pre-season training next month and beginning our quest for another MLS Cup championship.”

Galaxy manager Bruce Arena said Donovan’s decision was the best for both player and club.

“We think (it’s) in the best interest of the club and the player that Landon continues his postseason break and begins preparations for what will be a challenging year in 2011 at both the domestic and international levels,” Arena said.
