Another week, another set of fixtures for the only major European league currently running – the German Bundesliga. Teams at the top and bottom of the table have been able to cause a stir in the first few weeks of the return to action, and today, we’ll be taking a look at a clash between Bayern Munich and Fortuna Dusseldorf. The league table would suggest that this is going to be a bit of a mismatch, but that genre doesn’t really seem to exist anymore.

Bayern Munich

As if securing back to back wins upon their return from the break wasn’t enough, Bayern Munich put in an incredibly professional performance to see off the challenge of Borussia Dortmund during the week. It was the kind of win that reiterated why they’re viewed as the overwhelming favourites to win the title yet again this season, and as we look ahead to the rest of the campaign, it’s starting to get difficult to imagine anyone else securing the crown.

Team News

Coutinho, Sule, Tolisso and Thiago are all out of action through injury, whereas Boateng is expected to be fit despite coming off injured in his last time games. Arp is back to full fitness and could feature, whereas Lewandowski will likely start up top.

Fortuna Dusseldorf

Dusseldorf’s recent unbeaten run would lead you to believe they’re a stable midtable side – when in actuality, they’re still lingering down towards the bottom of the league table in the midst of a relegation battle. Their comeback win over Schalke earlier this week was a huge moment in their season, and now, they can look towards this meeting without any fear. Nobody expects them to come away with even a point, so why not go out there and play like you’ve got nothing to lose.

Team News

Ayhan will be available following his recent suspension whereas Steffen is still out for this one courtesy of a knee problem. Kownacki is almost fully recovered from his own knee injury, whereas Karaman is being tipped to start alongside Hennings in Munich.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting back in November, Bayern beat Dusseldorf 4-0.
  • Bayern have won their last six games.
  • Dusseldorf have won one and drawn five of their last six games.
  • Bayern have scored 17 goals and conceded two in their last six games.
  • Dusseldorf have scored nine goals and conceded eight in their last six games.

Conclusion

Pushing the pace and finding openings with ease is what Bayern are all about, and as long as they don’t fall into the complacency trap, they should be just fine here. Dusseldorf know how to grind out results and they’ve done well to create some distance for themselves at the bottom of the table, but the job is far from done. We think Bayern are going to slowly but surely suck the life out of Dusseldorf before easing to a relatively comfortable three points.

Prediction: Bayern Munich win
