Prediction: Burnley vs Cardiff City

Verdict: Burnley win.

Burnley welcome Cardiff City in the Premier League on Saturday. At first glance, it may seem that this encounter holds very little interest, but it’s actually one that could decide a lot. Huddersfield Town and Fulham have already been relegated to the Championship for next season, but Cardiff sit in 18th place with 28 points, six less than Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion directly above. The Saints welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to St Mary’s and Brighton welcome Bournemouth at the same time when Cardiff visit Turf Moor, and should the results go certain ways, the Welsh side could find themselves stuck deep in the relegation mud.

Not so long ago, the Clarets were also in considerable danger, but they snapped out of it just in time to win their last two games – at home against Wolves and away to Bournemouth, and they now find themselves on an eight-point cushion over their Saturday opponents.

Their form has been an awkward story in the last few months. They beat Tottenham Hotspur at home back in Febraury, and they left Old Trafford undefeated before that, but in March they suffered defeat at home to the likes of Crystal Palace and Leicester City. Their run of last five games reads three consecutive defeats, followed by the two consecutive wins mentioned above. Their goalscoring form hasn’t been too bad (all things considered) with 40 strikes in 33 games, but their defensive record is very poor – 60 goals conceded.

Team News

Striker Peter Crouch, who arrived from Stoke City in January, is still an injury doubt together with winger Aaron Lennon and fullback Phil Bardsley.

Cardiff City

With clashes against Liverpool and Manchester United still to come, Cardiff simply must go all out to take all the points they can get from all the other games remaining on their schedule between now and the end of season. Even that may not be enough to secure Premier League survival, but it would certainly give them a proper chance.

They may have been unfortunate in some of them, but their last six games have been defeats, including for example a 1-5 mauling at home by Watford. If they even dream of playing in the top tier next season, it’s now or never to stop that trend.

Team News

Manager Neil Warnock is likely to be without five players through injury: Defenders Sol Bamba, Matthew Connolly and Jazz Richards, midfielder Harry Arter, and striker Callum Paterson.

Despite the Welsh team’s strong motivation, it is to be expected that they fall short of their hosts at Turf Moor.

Verdict: Burnley win.

Best odds: 10/11
