Four days after their surprising defeat in Florence, Serie A title hopefuls Inter Milan will face Fiorentina once more, this time at San Siro on Monday evening.

The Italian champions endured only their second league loss of the season at Stadio Artemio Franchi, where the Viola claimed victory in a match that was initially paused due to distressing events.

Inter Milan

When Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed during the first half of December’s clash with Inter, the match was abandoned due to concerns for his health, later revealed to be a cardiac arrest. Though Bove is now on the road to recovery, he can no longer compete in Serie A after receiving an ICD pacemaker. The fixture was eventually rescheduled, resuming from the 17th minute.

Inter traveled to Tuscany knowing a win would move them top of the table on goal difference, as they played their game in hand over league leaders Napoli.

Simone Inzaghi’s side had already secured a spot in the Champions League’s last 16 and salvaged a late draw in the Derby della Madonnina, courtesy of Stefan de Vrij’s late goal against AC Milan. However, they were halted on Thursday evening, as Fiorentina netted three second-half goals to hand Inter their first away defeat of the Serie A season.

Having not suffered consecutive league losses since April 2023, Inzaghi’s men will be eager to bounce back quickly and maintain pressure on Napoli, as the gripping Scudetto race heats up.

Team News

Due to Lega Serie A regulations, neither team was permitted to field new signings on Thursday, as the match was originally scheduled to conclude in December. As a result, Nicola Zalewski was unavailable for Inter.

With Denzel Dumfries now suspended, the Polish wing-back could make his first start since joining on loan from Roma, though Matteo Darmian is another option for the hosts on the right flank.

This may be Simone Inzaghi’s only adjustment, with captain Lautaro Martinez once again partnering top scorer Marcus Thuram up front. Thuram netted his first Serie A goal against Fiorentina at San Siro in September 2023 and also provided an assist for Martinez in that match. Sitting on 13 league goals this season, one more would mark a new personal best for Thuram.

Fiorentina

Following their impressive 3-0 victory at home on Thursday, Fiorentina are looking to complete a double over Inter for the first time since 2016, a season in which they finished fifth in the standings. Moise Kean’s brace, after a well-taken goal from captain Luca Ranieri, capped off a dominant performance that followed their notable away win against Lazio, where they played much of the second half with 10 men.

Despite a shaky start to 2025, the Tuscan side now sits on 42 points—their highest total at this stage of a season in nine years. Depending on how Italian teams fare in UEFA competitions, including Fiorentina’s own run in the Conference League, a top-five finish might be enough to secure their long-awaited return to Europe’s elite stage.

However, Raffaele Palladino’s squad still faces stiff competition, with at least six teams battling for spots behind Italy’s current top two. A win on Monday would strengthen their case as serious contenders, but victories over Inter at San Siro remain a rare feat.

Team News

After his brace on Thursday, Fiorentina’s leading scorer Moise Kean now edges ahead of Marcus Thuram in the Capocannoniere race and needs just one more goal to surpass his previous best in Europe’s top five leagues.

This time around, the Viola can also field recent signings Michael Folorunsho, Cher Ndour, Nicolo Fagioli, and Nicolo Zaniolo, the latter having once played in Inter’s primavera squad. However, new arrival Pablo Mari is sidelined with an injury, promising defender Pietro Comuzzo is suspended for one match, and Albert Gudmundsson is out with tonsillitis.

After being forced to deploy two sets of full-backs due to Thursday’s lineup restrictions—a strategy that ultimately paid off—it remains uncertain how many changes Raffaele Palladino will implement for Monday’s clash.

Conclusion

Since the beginning of last season, Inter have suffered just two defeats in 30 Serie A home matches, winning 21 of them.

Fueled by the desire to avenge their recent loss to Fiorentina and maintain pressure on title contenders Napoli, the Nerazzurri are well-positioned to claim another victory at San Siro.

Verdict: Home win
