Inter Milan continue their pursuit of the Serie A title on Sunday night when they welcome Roma to San Siro for a high‑stakes showdown.
Although the Nerazzurri still sit six points clear of city rivals AC Milan at the summit, a recent dip in results has ensured the Scudetto race remains alive with eight rounds still to play.
Inter Milan
Inter’s momentum has stalled since their victory over Juventus in the most recent Derby d’Italia, a period that has coincided with the absence of talismanic captain Lautaro Martínez. A congested run across three competitions has exposed some vulnerabilities, beginning with consecutive defeats to Bodø/Glimt that brought their Champions League campaign to a premature end.
Cristian Chivu’s side responded by edging past Genoa and then grinding out a goalless Coppa Italia draw with Como, but another setback followed in the Derby della Madonnina as Milan emerged victorious. Inter were then denied all three points by a late equaliser against Atalanta before enduring a three‑game winless league run for the first time since April 2023.
Before the international break, the Nerazzurri again failed to protect an early advantage, conceding a late goal in a 1–1 draw away to relegation‑threatened Fiorentina. That sequence has reduced what was once a commanding lead at the top to six points, while reigning champions Napoli have also closed the gap to seven.
Despite those stumbles, Inter remain well placed to challenge on multiple fronts. Their Coppa Italia semi‑final against Como will conclude later this month at San Siro, keeping alive hopes of a rare domestic double in Chivu’s debut season. At home in Serie A, Inter have been formidable, recording 11 wins, two draws and just two defeats.
With AC Milan and Napoli meeting the following night, Inter know a win over Roma would restore control. They edged the reverse fixture 1–0 in October, and the return of Martínez could prove decisive. Set for his first start since February, the captain remains top of the Capocannoniere standings with 14 league goals, eight of which opened the scoring.
Team News
Marcus Thuram has endured a quieter spell but comes back into contention after ending a lengthy international drought, pushing young Pio Esposito for a place in attack. Esposito has scored Inter’s last two goals, though his confidence suffered after missing a penalty in Italy’s World Cup playoff shootout defeat to Bosnia‑Herzegovina, a match that also saw Alessandro Bastoni sent off.
Bastoni has been under scrutiny but is expected to start, especially with Yann Bisseck and Carlos Augusto both unavailable. Francesco Acerbi may also come into the back line as Inter reshuffle defensively.
Roma
Roma arrive in Milan with renewed belief, having enjoyed recent success at San Siro. They have won two of their last three away league games against Inter, including a 1–0 victory less than a year ago when Matías Soulé struck the decisive goal.
After a painful Europa League exit to Bologna, the Giallorossi regained momentum just before the break by defeating Lecce 1–0, ending a damaging five‑match winless run. That result lifted them level with Juventus on 54 points, three shy of fourth‑placed Como in a tightly packed race for Italy’s final Champions League berth.
The challenge ahead is daunting. Roma face a brutal run‑in that includes clashes with Atalanta, Fiorentina, Bologna again and city rivals Lazio. Few tests are tougher than this trip north, especially given their struggles away from home.
Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has a difficult history against Inter, having lost 18 of his 32 meetings with the Nerazzurri, more than against any other opponent. His current side have also accumulated 10 fewer points on the road than at home, and Roma’s last away win in all competitions came back in January. Seven of their 10 league defeats this season have occurred away from the capital.
Team News
One bright spot has been Donyell Malen. Since arriving in mid‑January, the Dutch forward has been Serie A’s top scorer with seven goals, carrying the attacking burden amid injuries elsewhere. Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk are edging closer to returns, but Evan Ferguson remains sidelined with an ankle issue.
Soulé and Inter transfer target Manu Koné have both returned to full training, while Wesley—linked with Arsenal—picked up a muscular injury on international duty and is expected to miss at least the next fortnight.
Conclusion
The return of their captain could be the catalyst Inter need to halt their recent slide and reassert authority in the title race.
With Martínez leading the line, the Nerazzurri should possess enough attacking quality to breach Roma’s typically stubborn defence in what is likely to be a closely fought contest.
