Inter Milan welcome AS Roma to the San Siro Stadium on Saturday evening in what will be the 33rd Serie A match of the season for the two teams, one that is set to see Inter’s Radja Naiggolan and Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo face their old teams – the two players were swapped between these clubs last summer.
Inter
The Nerazzurri have had a relatively successful season so far. They currently occupy third place in the Serie A table with 60 points, behind runaway leaders Juventus and second-place Napoli. Champions League qualification is a must for them if they even want to dream about returning to the paths of former glory, or anywhere near it for that matter. They are in a very good position to achieve that goal come the end of the season, but they mustn’t allow any slip-ups in the final stretch.
Team News
Head coach Luciano Spalletti will be without the services of the pair of Croatian internationals, defender Šime Vrsaljko and midfielder Marcelo Brozović, who are both ruled out due to injury.
Roma
The team that bears the historic name of the Italian capital is in a slightly more difficult situation at this point of the season. It was mostly them who took advantage of the slumps of the two Milan clubs in recent years, and with their rise once again on the horizon, it is them who seem to be the obvious casualty when it comes to Champions League qualification. They sit in fifth place with 54 points to their name at the moment, but they are far from being ruled out of the top-four race. AC Milan in fourth are only a point ahead with six rounds yet to be played, but Atalanta, city rivals Lazio and even Torino in eighth place are breathing down their necks. They need all the points they can get.
Team News
Former Chelsea and Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri, now in charge at Roma, has the full squad at his disposal. There are no absentees, either through injury or suspension.
Conclusion
Inter have displayed a slightly better form in the last five league games, winning three of those, drawing one and losing one, while Roma won two, drew one and lost two. Their previous two head-to-head meetings were draws, 1-1 in Milan in January last year and 2-2 in Rome in December. However, it is to be expected that Inter, who do have more overall quality and experience in their team, will be able to take advantage of the home soil and win the three points.
Verdict: Inter win.
