The road to UEFA Euro 2020 continues this week, as teams across the continent attempt to battle their way towards the final tournament. There are many countries that are in the running from the big dogs to the underdogs, and either way, it seems as if it’s going to go down to the wire with many of the groups. The game that we’re going to take a look at today will see Poland and Austria square off, both of whom have a really good chance at progressing – and three points here would give them a huge boost.

Poland

Poland have supposedly been in the midst of a golden generation for longer than we can even remember, but even with that being the case, they just haven’t been able to live up to their potential. They have some really high quality players within their ranks but they can’t quite function as a squad, which makes them pretty similar to their Austrian opponents. Time is running out, and if they can’t make something happen at next year’s Euros, they may miss their chance.

Team News

Robert Lewandowski will lead the line for Poland, with the expectation being that they will continue to implement a 4-4-2 formation.

Austria

Austria haven’t been able to call themselves a real force in European football for a long time, and while there’s every chance that they could rise up within the next few years, the few players of name value aren’t going to be enough to get them to that point. They need to start working together as a cohesive unit, and it’s certainly not as easily done as you would think. If they can get the win over Poland here, though, they may start to get a little bit more confident heading into the dying stages of

Team News

A 4-2-3-1 formation is expected to be put in place for Austria once again in this game, with Alaba continuing his transition from being a defensive star to leading the line as an attacking force.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting back in March, Poland beat Austria 1-0.
  • Poland have won four and lost one of their Euro 2020 qualifying games.
  • Austria have won three and lost two of their Euro 2020 games.
  • Poland have scored eight goals and conceded two in qualifying.
  • Austria have scored 13 goals and conceded six in qualifying.

Conclusion

Poland just seem to be able to pull out the big win in qualifying when it matters the most, whereas Austria don’t give us quite as much confidence. It’s going to be a really entertaining game one way or another, and we can see a series of goals flying in on either side of the ball. We’d even suggest that it’ll be a late winner that gets the job done for the Poles, because let’s face it, their attacking forces stack up pretty well against the Austrians and we can’t picture the visitors being able to overcome that.
