The eighth round of the Serie A season is being played this weekend, and while Inter Milan are set to play their eight game of the campaign accordingly, Sassuolo have a game in hand. It means that Sassuolo will take to the pitch for the seventh time in the league when they welcome the Nerazzuri to their Stadio Citta del Tricolore on Sunday.

Sassuolo

The home side sit in 15th place at the moment with six points to their name from six games. Those six points came from home victories over Sampdoria and SPAL. They’ve so far suffered defeats at the hands of Torino, AS Roma and Parma, all away, but Atalanta managed to thrash them 1-4 in their own yard.

There have been at least three goals in each of their games so far except the 1-0 defeat to Parma, and the 1-0 win over Spezia in the third round of Coppa Italia back in August.

Even though there are some names in their team that are known to the wide football public, such as Vlad Chiriches, Jeremy Toljan and Pedro Obiang, the success of 2015/16 when they finished sixth seems a long age ago, and surviving in the Italian top flight may prove all this team could realistically hope to achieve this term.

Team News

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi cannot count on defender Rogerio Oliveira da Silva and backup goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo, while Chiriches is a doubt together with fellow defender Alessandro Tripaldelli and midfielder Filip Djuricic.

Inter

Inter have made some pretty big alterations to their squad over the summer, underlining a strong desire to return to the very top of Italian football and challenge the seemingly perpetual champions Juventus. It’s by no means an easy task, with the Old Lady strengthening too and Napoli also very eager to finally win the title, having finished as runners-up in three of the last four seasons.

They parted ways with the likes of Mauro Icardi, Radja Nainggolan and Ivan Perisic, and added big names in forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, as well as defender Diego Godin, to complement the appointment of former Juventus and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

The Nerazzuri sit directly below Juventus at the moment with a single point making the difference between them, and it looks at the moment like the race for the Serie A title will truly be interesting this time around. They’ve won six of their seven games so far, losing only to Juventus in the previous round.

Team News

Conte will be without the services of Sanchez, as well as defender Danilo D’Ambrosio, due to injury. Stefano Sensi has returned to training having recovered from a thigh problem, but it remains to be seen if he will be in contention.

Conclusion

It’s hard to see how Sassuolo can compete with Inter at this point. If the visitors are to pursue their goals, they simply cannot allow themselves to be stopped at the Stadio Citta del Tricolore. Anything can happen in football, of course, but a comfortable away win would be a realistic result here.

Verdict: Away win
