Real Madrid have made singing an experienced, high-quality central defender a priority, according to Marca.
The Champions League holders have been trying to address this position for a while now, ever since Pepe left for Besiktas, but so far they haven’t been successful. The two places in the heart of defence in the starting XI are certainly covered with the presence of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, but beyond that, it’s only Nacho who is able to respond properly when called upon, to an extent. Jesus Vallejo is not meeting the expectations. They need to add a player of quality nearer to the first-choice pair who have been virtually unchallenged for a long time now.
The players they’ve been looking at are either unobtainable due to obvious reasons (Lucas and Jose Gimenez of Atletico Madrid and Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona), or aren’t deemed good enough (Leo Santos of Corinthians and Mario Hermoso of Espanyol).
Therefore, their search for a suitable target continues.
