Real Madrid have decided not to pursue Christian Eriksen of Tottenham Hotspur anymore, according to AS.
The Denmark international was seen as a potential long-term replacement for Luka Modrić, but the Champions League holders now believe that they already have the answer to that particular problem within their ranks.
Modrić’s contract expires soon and he was linked with a move to Inter Milan last summer, which prompted Real to consider Eriksen in the first place. However, they now intend to tie him down to a new deal, one that would likely see him retire at the Santiago Bernabeu, and even though he turns 34 this year, they aren’t worried about the future of the position.
Dani Ceballos, who has also been linked with departure in the past, is one of president Florentino Perez’s personal favorites, and at the age of 22, he is now seen as Modrić’s long-term successor. Modrić realistically expects to lose prominence in the next few years, and he apparently has no problem with gradually surrendering his role to Ceballos.
