Sanchez and Smalling face uncertain futures

Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling are both set to return to Manchester United when their respective loans with Inter Milan and AS Roma expire, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

In a bid to end what was a horrible 18-month spell at Old Trafford, the Chilean forward went to Inter last summer, hoping for a permanent change of scenery once the temporary move was over. However, Di Marzio claims Inter are not interested at all in keeping his services past this summer, having gotten an extremely modest output of one goal in 15 games from the loan. Whether United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decides to give him a chance or tells him to find a new club, remains to be seen.

Like Alexis, Smalling is also set to return to Manchester but for different reasons. Roma do want to keep the 30-year-old defender permanently, but they’ve so far been unable to reach an agreement with United. They are, however, likely to try again.
