Schalke 04 have announced that Japanese defender Atsuto Uchida will be plying his trade for them in the 2010/11 Bundesliga season. The 22 year old wingback has signed a three year contract with the Royal Blues and becomes their fourth signing of the summer after Christoph Metzelder, Erik Jendrisek and Tim Hoogland.
Schalke have reportedly paid Kashima Antlers 1.3 million euros for Uchida’s services. Uchida is currently on international duty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where Japan are in Group E along with the Netherlands, Denmark and Cameroon.
Uchida was named in the J-League’s Best Eleven in 2008 and 2009 and was also part of the Japanese team that took part at the Beijing Olympics.
Schalke finished second in the Bundesliga last season.
