Schalke striker Mark Uth appeared to be knocked unconscious and was taken off on a stretcher following a worrying clash of heads in Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Augsburg.

Uth seemed to sustain a blow around his upper neck and head area as he went in for an aerial challenge with Augbsurg’s Felix Uduokhai in the 10th minute.

Uth, who also collided with another player on his way down to the ground, was tended to by medical staff who swiftly rushed onto the pitch, where he received extensive treatment for around 10 minutes.

With players visibly in a state of shock – Uduokhai being close to tears – Uth also received an IV drip, which Schalke captain Omar Mascarell helped to administer.

The 29-year-old Uth was eventually lifted onto a stretcher in a neck brace, and taken off the field, with the game continuing following discussions on the sidelines – Schalke boss Manuel Baum gathering his team together for a huddle prior to the match restarting.

Schalke subsequently announced Uth was “responsive and stable”, with the ex-Hoffenheim man having been taken to hospital, accompanied by the club’s team doctor.

Uth’s injury comes two weeks after Wolves forward Raul Jimenez sustained a serious head injury in a Premier League match with Arsenal.

Jimenez suffered a fractured skull in a collision with David Luiz, though it is expected the Mexico striker will make a full recovery.
