Silva: ´Three or four years ago no one would believe Fulham are in this position´

Fulham boss Marco Silva praised the club’s ambition after they moved a step closer to securing European football next season with a 3-1 comeback win over relegation-threatened Burnley.

Josh King starred at Craven Cottage with a goal and an assist, pulling the hosts level after a low-key first half, cancelling out Zian Flemming’s 60th-minute opener with a sharp finish on the spin.

King then turned provider, teeing up Harry Wilson for a low strike in the 73rd minute to complete the turnaround.

Raul Jimenez then extended his superb record from the penalty spot (14/14 in the Premier League – the best conversion rate in the competition’s history) with a cool spot-kick to round off a comprehensive win.

The Cottagers climbed to eighth in the Premier League table, leaving them comfortably in the mix heading into the international break.

“We are there, and we are going to fight now,” Silva told BBC Match of the Day when asked about his side’s European ambitions.

“We have to be pleased to be in that position. We have to create positivity around the club and the fight because three or four years ago, no one would believe we would be in this position, but now we look forward and demand more from ourselves.

“It’s nice, I want to put more of this kind of pressure on us.”

Fulham’s win came in large part through an inspired performance from King, who, at 19 years and 77 days, became the second-youngest player to both score and assist in a Premier League game for the Cottagers, after Collins John against Blackburn Rovers in April 2004 (18y 178d).

“It’s a top moment for Josh. He was really working hard and looking for it for a long time,” Silva continued.

“He has to have more impact in terms of assists and goals, and he always has the right mindset.

“This will be the first of many because he has the talent, and he always has the right mindset to listen and learn. Already a very good level, and I’m sure he has a brilliant future ahead of him.”

Burnley, meanwhile, look primed for the drop following this loss. Flemming’s strike on the hour marked the latest the Clarets have opened the scoring in a Premier League game and still gone on to lose.

“I see a lot of positive things. This group, every time they step over the line, they are full of commitment,” Burnley boss Scott Parker told BBC MOTD.

“We showed some courage, bravery and certainly the predicament we’re in. This is a young squad experiencing different things – technically, tactically and psychologically. I was pleased with certain parts.

“That’s the constant drive – you don’t have a choice, and sometimes in life you don’t have a choice.

“We can be critical when we’ve fallen short, but seven games left, and I can guarantee you this team will be fully committed.”
