The end of an Atletico era?

It will be nothing short of an end of an era for Atletico Madrid this summer, as Spanish outlet Marca believe.

Diego Simeone’s team were stunned at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Wednesday as Cristiano Ronaldo, their old foe, struck three times and delivered a blow strong enough to knock them out of the Champions League.

Atletico have played in two finals under Simeone – and lost both to city rivals Real – but it seems the end of the road has come for some of his players.

First and foremost, captain Diego Godin, who has certainly been a stalwart tower of Atletico’s defence in recent years, is set to leave the club to join Inter Milan this summer, and that will be a heavy blow. Felipe Luis will likely be heading out as well, while the future of striker Diego Costa remains in the air at this point.

Antoine Griezmann will still be there to hold the fort along with veteran midfielder Koke, but the lack of influence from newer players like Thomas Lemar and Santiago Arias will be a big worry.
